Suzana Maria L. Astuti Fajarini, S.Pd.M.Hum is a lecturer at Satya Wacana Christian University (SWCU) in Salatiga, as well as the former Dean of Language and Arts Faculty (FLA) from 2017-2022. Prior to serving as Dean, she served as Chair of the Language Center which is now the Language Training Center, then became Deputy Dean of Faculty of Languages and Arts from 2012-2015, and in the last period she was elected as Dean of FLA for 5 years (2017-2022).
Being a Dean has challenges as well as a big responsibility to build an advanced faculty.
"The more challenging part is how to apply the ideas from university leaders to faculties. Meanwhile, within the faculty, there are different aspirations from the other lecturers and staff.” Mrs. Suzana said.
The thing that Mrs. Suzan does to implement these ideas is to listen to every suggestion and discuss with lectures and other staff as well. For business matters, it must be prioritized, so Mrs. Suzan ignored her favorite hobbies like photography and writing. Mrs. Suzan has decided to keep all her things related to her favorite hobby so she can spend time between work and rest. Even so, many things impressed her. She is very proud of this position. Because she has a very compact work partner, they could work together, and support each other. She has also completed her duties as dean for 5 years and now she has to leave this position. What she felt after leaving as dean was a sense of relief that she was no longer bound by policy, nor was it squished in the desires of her fellow faculty, so that she could spend more time with herself developing what she liked.
Besides her duties as a lecturer, Mrs. Suzan has interests in photography, painting, and writing. The hobby she had been practicing for a long time had to stop because for almost 8 years she had focused on becoming an official at the Faculty. So that when she was no longer a dean, she wanted to enjoy her life by returning to her hobby which had been in a vacuum for a long time.
"Because I have been in the office for too long, now is the time for me to return to my hobby. And also to catch up on the Tridharma of higher education in terms of community service and research," she said.
In the past, before pursuing her hobby in photography, she liked to paint because she couldn't capture something instantly with a camera. After owning a camera, she felt that painting took too long a time because she couldn't capture something in one shot. In terms of photography itself, she is more interested in Nature Photography. As she said, "It's easier to photograph nature. For example, if a flower wants to be photographed, how many times will it not protest? It's different from humans, it's more difficult to work with."
Mrs. Suzan usually shared her shots on her own Facebook page and a photography group called Artistic Photography. Her work was so amazing and got so many awards. It's not easy to pursue this field, but it makes her comfortable, forgets sadness, and doesn't interfere with other activities.
When photographing an object, it can be used as an inspiration to the student to make a work based on the reference to the photos. In addition, the photograph can be a creative idea that the student can use to create a story. Mrs. Suzan also joined the "Class Exel" photography club so that she was able to make many friends to introduce her interest in photography. Being part of the photography club can create photographs of her on display as a photo of the day or a photo of the week.
Being a lecturer was indeed her main task, but she also wanted to keep writing. For this reason, she looked for ways to guide her students in Creative Writing while still pursuing her hobby of writing.
Writing activities often Mrs. Suzan does when she has time. In writing, Mrs. Suzan wrote various works of fiction that were then sent to the publisher for publication. She really likes to express her ideas in writing. Seeing her work be published and displayed would be an added pride to her, especially when a published work could be sold and make money made her feel so happy. That means a lot of people like her writing. One of the articles was published in the Yogyakarta magazine, Basis, a short story titled "Sumur Tua dan Dua Ekor Macan" in 2017/2018.
